Kurma (the tortoise / Kashyapa) is the second avatar of Lord Vishnu — the divine support upon which the cosmos rests. In the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the cosmic ocean), Kurma dove to the ocean floor and bore the weight of Mount Mandara upon his back so that the gods and asuras could churn forth the nectar of immortality. The lotus-shaped diya sits at the center of the tortoise’s back — a wide, open cup with petals curving outward and a serrated petal-edge rim, with five wick channels (pancha batti) spaced around the rim for five simultaneous flames — the auspicious number associated with the five elements, the pancha tatvas, and the complete puja offering of light.
