Garuda (Garutmanta / Suparna / Vainateya) is the divine eagle — the king of all birds, the son of sage Kashyapa and Vinata, and the sacred vahana (vehicle) of Lord Vishnu. He is one of the most powerful beings in all of creation — the destroyer of serpents (nagas), the carrier of Vishnu across the cosmos, and a deity worshipped in his own right as a protector against snake bite, poison, evil spirits, and all forms of negative energy. He is also revered as the embodiment of the Vedas themselves, for it is said that the Vedic hymns flow from the beating of his wings. His worship is especially auspicious in the Vaishnava tradition and in South and Southeast Asian sacred art and temple culture.
The murti depicts Garuda standing upright in samabhanga upon a rectangular stepped base with lotus petal relief engravings on the front. His most striking features are his magnificent wings — spread wide on both sides, each rendered with rows of fine diagonal feather engravings in the style of classical South Indian temple Garuda sculptures. His hands are pressed together in anjali mudra at the chest, expressing the supreme humility and devotion of the vahana before his Lord. His face is avian — eagle-like with large expressive eyes, a prominent beak-nose, and a joyful, devout smile. He wears a magnificent Vaishnava mukut (crown) — multi-layered with a circular crown base richly decorated in relief, a central emblem of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi visible in the mukut’s face, and a rounded conical finial at the top. He is fully ornamented with a multi-strand necklace, armlets, anklets, and a decorated waistband with a central diamond-shaped clasp.
